What is whole-step-down tuning?
Whole step down—often called D standard—lowers every string by two semitones. E A D G B E becomes D G C F A D. Because all intervals remain the same, standard-tuning chord and scale shapes still work, but they sound one whole step lower.
How to tune to D standard
- Lower the sixth string from E2 to D2.
- Lower A2 to G2 and D3 to C3.
- Lower G3 to F3, B3 to A3, and E4 to D4.
- Play for a minute, then make a second pass across all strings.
Lowering all six strings reduces the total pull on the neck. It is normal for previously tuned strings to move slightly while the instrument settles.

D standard versus Drop D
In Drop D, only the sixth string changes and the notes are D A D G B E. In D standard, every string moves down a whole step to D G C F A D. Drop D preserves most standard chord relationships while D standard preserves all the standard intervals at a lower overall pitch.
String gauge and setup
A regular set can work for occasional use, but lower tension may feel loose—especially on shorter-scale guitars. Players who stay in D standard often prefer a slightly heavier set. If heavier strings bind in the nut, or if the guitar buzzes and plays sharp up the neck, a professional setup may help.
- Do not compensate for loose strings by pressing harder; that can pull notes sharp.
- Check intonation after settling on a permanent gauge and tuning.
